About Hardwood Flooring
A telltale trapping of the finer side of life, hardwood flooring is the ultimate interior accent. When you won’t settle for anything but the best, the choice to install hardwood flooring is an obvious one. Enduring and one-of-a-kind, your hardwood floor will last a lifetime and beyond, if properly maintained.
There are many, many reasons to opt for hardwood floors. Properly vetted hardwood can be an enormous benefit for homeowners: it will dramatically increase your property value and instantly transforms your interiors. Still, the reality is that hardwood floors aren’t for everyone: they tend to be pricier than other types of flooring, and they don’t fare well in wet environments.
Solid Hardwood vs. Engineered Hardwood
So, you’re leaning towards hardwood for your next flooring project? Did you know there are two types of hardwood flooring? Which one is the best choice for your budget and space? As it turns out, each has its respective pros and cons, so it truly depends on your needs.
Comprised of solid wooden planks, the more traditional solid hardwood is especially coveted for its natural good looks – not to mention, its ability to be refinished for an infinite about of times. Solid hardwood can represent a serious investment, however, and isn’t compatible with below-grade spaces, such as finished basements.
A newer alternative to solid hardwood is engineered hardwood. While engineered hardwood looks and feels a lot like its solid cousin, a lot is going on beneath the surface. Crafted in multiple layers of wood, engineered hardwood is denser, and has a water-resistant core, making it a better choice for humid climates and for below-grade areas. It can also be refinished a handful of times over its lifetime.
Hardwood flooring incorporates hardwood species from all over the world, so there are certainly plenty of choices to ponder. It’s really all about personal preference: are you drawn towards exotic black walnut, down-home red oak, or lush acacia?
